Description

This lot includes a full set of the Macallan Travel Series: 1920s, 1930s 1940s & 1950s, each in their presentation boxes. 4 x 50cl.

  • Macallan - 1920s:  Inspired by a 1920’s Macallan and is the first edition of four in the travel series that was released in 2004.  Most of the Macallan in the 1920s was produced was sold to whisky blenders as tope dressing single malt for their blended whiskies. The remaining casks continued to mature for longer, resulting in a whisky that was drier and less toffee sweet than Macallan today. 40% ABV, 50cl.
  • Macallan - 1930s: During the 1930s the whisky was influenced by Macallan reverting to drying barley using peat fire opposed to using coal because of the increased industrial activity, and the scarcity of oak sherry casks due to the Spanish civil war. It resulted in a whisky that was both peatier and less spicy than Macallan today. 40%, 50cl.
  • Macallan 1940s: During the 1940s, with a shortage of sherry cask as a result of the Second World War, Macallan would refill their casks more often than is the current practice. This, combined with the use of peat to dry the barley, resulting in a whisky that was less spicy and peatier than modern day Macallan. 40%, 50cl.

  • Macallan 1950s: During the 1950s, Macallan whisky was as rich and spicy as modern-day Macallan, but with a hint of peat smoke.  This was due to Spanish oak sherry casks becoming available again, following the disruption of the second world war. Macallan was ale to revert to using only first and second fill casks. 50cl, 40%.
