Description

Ardbeg distillery, found on the south coast of Islay, has been producing whisky since 1798. The commercial aspect of the distillery began production in 1815 and for most of its history the whisky was used for blends rather than as a single malt.

In the 1800s Ardbeg was producing 300,000 gallons a year. However, tough times throughout the Scotch Whisky industry followed and the distillery closed for quite sometime. However, Glenmorangie PLC saw the calibre of the distillery and purchased it in 1996. It then was bought over by the French giants LVMH on the 28th of December 2004. Michael "Mickey" Heads, an Islay originally and he was former manager at Jura who had worked at Ardbeg years earlier, took over on 12 March 2007 until 2020. The new manager, Colin Gordon is set to take over the helm and drive e the company forward to even greater success.

This release has caused quite the stir...its the most popular release in recent memory. Labelled Rare Cask #1, it has such a unique history and who better to do the tasting notes than Dr Bill Lumsden. During his work on the An Oa release, Dr Bill used several casks for experimentation to try and determine the perfect flavour combination. This liquid was initially matured in a Oloroso Sherry Cask and laterally moved into a virgin charred barrel. The result? An experimental Ardbeg with a unique spiciness... 6 Stars from Bill and 7 from TGWA!! Only 354 bottles will ever be produced of this fascinating dram and quite possibly the last bottle to bear Mickys Signature.

This lot contains 6 x Ardbeg Shortie Glasses.
