Description

A very exciting and rare bottling where you have a chance to own a piece of whisky history! The bottle comes from one of the most famous shipwrecks in history, the S.S Politician.

The SS Politician ran aground off the shores of Eriskay in the Outer Hebrides in 1941.

The salvage operation by divers, islanders, and the efforts of custom and excise officials to frustrate this, inspired the novel Whisky Galore. This was adapted for cinema in 1949 and again in 2016.

Everyone in the whisky world is well aware of the significance of the SS Politician, which is why its story has been adapted for cinema twice. The whisky onboard ranged from Gilbey’s, Ballantine’s, VAT 69 and more.

This bottle was the first prize in a 300 words or less poem competition run by The Mail on Sunday in 1987. The competition asked for entries from all over the UK and it received a vast amount of attention. The judging panel deemed that Scott McLarens poem of "Polly" was undoubtedly the most worthy winner. The runners-up received a bottle of Glenmorangie.

This lot includes the newspaper clippings of the story, competition entry requirements, newspaper confirmation of the winner, the winning poem, letter to the winner, photo of the winner and of course the bottle itself.

Prior to any bid being placed on a lot, close up visual inspection is to be carried out. If you are unsure in any way about the condition of the said lot, click “ask a question” above. More in-depth descriptions and additional photos can be taken upon request. Otherwise, lots are sold as seen in the pictures. The bidder understands that once you have bid, you are stating you understand this and that the checks stated above have been carried out and you are happy with the lot's condition.

TGWA may try to highlight conditions of interest of lots being sold in the auction. The majority of the items being sold are of second-hand nature and TGWA cannot be held responsible for any conditions that may not have been specified when listing the lots on the site. Thus, the bidder fully understands, prior to confirming a bid they are happy with the condition of the lot, whether it has conditions noted or otherwise.

Should there be a discrepancy between the photo and the lot title/description, the photograph holds the precedent. No claim can be lodged against a misdescribed item as all lots are sold as seen.

Due to the various ages of bottles and their seals, the condition of liquid is at the buyer's discretion and no claim can be lodged against failure/leakage in transit. Loss and breakage cover is available at 3% of the hammer price as standard. If the lot is not insured, no claim can be lodged against the courier or The Grand Whisky Auction for breakage or loss in transit.

Graphs are for information purposes only. TGWA accepts no responsibility for any errors or omissions in the data plotted. All bidders should also carry out their own research prior to any bids being placed.
