Description

Caol Ila lies tucked away in a hidden cove near Port Askaig, on Islay's north-east shore. It looks out towards Jura over the Sound of Islay, from which it takes its Gaelic name.

Standing apart from the more widely known whiskies of Islay, the appetizing malts that come from Caol Ila have their own sea-smoky style, much prized by malt connoisseurs.

These three textbook expressions show to different degrees the distillery's "bonfire on the beach" character. Each is fresh and clean yet still unmistakably an Islay malt.

Caol Ila - 12 Year Old (43%): Fresh, sweetly fruity and smooth-bodied, it's the colour of pale straw, with a pleasing balance of primary tastes. The clean, appetising nose shows subtle citrus fruit with just a puff of smoke. Firm and smooth, it begins sweetly then yields a fragrant smokiness and a sweet-smoky, lingering finish.

Caol Ila - 18 Year Old (43%): Age introduces a golden colour and complexity to this mellow, amber Caol Ila. It starts smoky-sweet on the nose then drinks smoothly, showing a sweet and sour character with good acidity and bags of salt. Firm and light to medium bodies. The long-lived finish evokes a distant, smouldering beach bonfire.

Caol Ila - Natural Cask Strength (59.3%): A medicinal, smoky nose introduces the strongest character here, bottled at 59.3% vol and "clean as an operating theatre". Smooth and light to start, it becomes strong, clean and assertive in flavour. Firm and smooth on the palate with sweetness again turning to salt. A pleasant, sustained lightly charred finish.

Prior to any bid being placed on a lot, close up visual inspection is to be carried out. If you are unsure in any way about the condition of the said lot, click “ask a question” above. More in-depth descriptions and additional photos can be taken upon request. Otherwise, lots are sold as seen in the pictures. The bidder understands that once you have bid, you are stating you understand this and that the checks stated above have been carried out and you are happy with the lot's condition.

TGWA may try to highlight conditions of interest of lots being sold in the auction. The majority of the items being sold are of second-hand nature and TGWA cannot be held responsible for any conditions that may not have been specified when listing the lots on the site. Thus, the bidder fully understands, prior to confirming a bid they are happy with the condition of the lot, whether it has conditions noted or otherwise.

Should there be a discrepancy between the photo and the lot title/description, the photograph holds the precedent. No claim can be lodged against a misdescribed item as all lots are sold as seen.

Due to the various ages of bottles and their seals, the condition of liquid is at the buyer's discretion and no claim can be lodged against failure/leakage in transit. Loss and breakage cover is available at 3% of the hammer price as standard. If the lot is not insured, no claim can be lodged against the courier or The Grand Whisky Auction for breakage or loss in transit.
