Description

Highland Park took the unusual step of creating this  17 Year Old - John Rae - Arctic Explorer expression by using predominantly ex-bourbon casks and refill casks, along with smaller quantities of their hallmark sherry seasoned American and European oak casks to create a bold and complex flavour profile.

In 2019, they married casks laid down during 2004 and earlier. Then left the
whisky to mature for nearly two more years.

Today, Orkney-born John Rae is widely regarded as the leading authority on Arctic travel and survival in the Victorian era. He mapped over 1.750 miles of uncharted Arctic coast, on foot or alone in a small boat.

In 1854, John Rae ultimately discovered the last, elusive, navigable link in the Northwest Passage between the Atlantic and Pacific, known today as the Rae Strait. Defying Victorian convention, he befriended indigenous tribes and keenly absorbed their survival and trekking skills, reputedly once covering over 1,200 miles in snowshoes and earning the Inuit name 'aglooka' or 'he who takes long strides:

This Highland Park bottle was released by the vision of The John Rae Society
to restore The Hall of Clestrain, the explorer's boyhood home in Orphir, in Orkney. As an internationally renowned visitor centre, it will share the role of John Rae and the Orkney Islands in Arctic exploration and discovery.
