Description

Laphroaig is a substantial distillery with 7 stills and a capacity of over 3 million litres per year! The distillery was built in 1815 by brothers Alexander and Donald Johnston, the distillery remained under D. Johnston & Co until the 1960s. In the 20th century, the distillery saw a rise to fame when Donald's great-grandson Ian Hunter took over. When Ian died, he left the distillery to his secretary, Bessie Williamson who had been the acting manager during Ian's extensive international sales trips. Bessie retired in 1972 and the distillery was granted a Royal Warrant in 1994 from HRH The Prince of Wales at the time. This was also the year that Friends of Laphroaig was founded, which to this day has around 640,000 members.

A younger, lively Laphroaig that has had the maturation process speeded up by ageing in quarter casks.  As the size of the cask is smaller the maturation doesn't need to be as long. This process has created a soft sweetness and a velvety feel when first tasted, and then the intense peatiness so unique to Laphroaig comes bursting through.
