Description

Founded in 1825 as an independent venture, Ben Nevis distillery it found is at Lochy Bridge in Fort William under the largest mountain in the whole of the UK, Ben Nevis. The entrepreneur, ’Long John' McDonald was a giant of a man and a descendant of a ruler of the western Scottish kingdom of Argyll. The whisky community will recognise this due to the renowned blended whisky after which Long John, was named.  John's sadly passed away in 1856 and ownership was moved to Donald McDonald, his son.

A second distillery was built in 1878, Nevis Distillery, to keep up with increasing demand. The two distilleries became one in 20th century. 1955 saw the taken over by Joseph Hobbs, where he introduced continuous distillation and installing a Coffey Still. This stayed for 26 years and allowed for the production of malt and grain whisky at the same time! Nikka bought the distillery in 1989 introduced some new cask-finishes, limited editions and independent bottlings.

A gift set containing a bottle of 21-year-old Ben Nevis and a pair of glasses. Distilled in November 1990, it was aged initially in refill hogsheads until 2003, before being transferred into ruby port butts until it was bottled in September 2012.
