Description

Penderyn is a Welsh whisky distillery and brand, producing the first commercially available whisky in Wales since the 19th century. Penderyn is widely known for its unique distillation practices as the spirit is only distilled once in a Faraday Copper Still.

This is their Icons of Wales series, a 50-part series dedicated to celebrating Welsh icons and their contribution to the nation.

This lot includes editions No.1-11.

Red Flag #1 (41%)

This is number 1 in the Icons of Wales series, each of which celebrates Wales and its people worldwide. This particular edition celebrates socialist activist Dic Penderyn.

This whisky is finished in Madeira casks to impart a delicate flavour of subtle complexity. Handcrafted to perfection, the unique distillation process at Penderyn produces a single malt whisky that is smooth, light in character and softly golden in colour.

Independence #2 (41%)

This single malt whisky is in honour of Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States, who also has a Welsh heritage.

This Penderyn is a limited edition release from the Welsh distillery, finished in Madeira wine casks.

Dylan Thomas #3 (41%)

This edition is the third Icons of Wales and commemorates Dylan Marlais Thomas, a poet from Swansea, South Wales.

This Penderyn Sherrywood edition has been aged in oloroso sherry casks and combined with whisky matured in American bourbon barrels to bring out its rich fruity flavour.

That Try #4 (41%)

Released in time for the Rugby World Cup 2015, it is a tribute to the greatest try ever scored in Welsh rugby history (aka 'That Try'), scored by Gareth Edwards for the Barbarians against New Zealand on 27 January 1973 at Cardiff Arms Park.

This peated whisky stems from the maturation of the light and fruity Penderyn spirit in the finest Kentucky ex-bourbon barrels first and then richly peated Islay quarter casks. Limited edition No.4 of 50 and bottled at 41% ABV.

Bryn Terfel #5 (41%)

Falstaff was the last opera written by Giuseppe Verdi, from a libretto by Arrigo Boito, and was premiered in 1893 at La Scala in Milan. A light comedy, based on the eponymous character who first appeared in three of Shakespeare's plays, it is believed by many to be Verdi's greatest opera.

The plot revolves around the tubby, egotistical, drunken yet charming knight, Sir John Falstaff, as he attempts to seduce two married women in order to gain access to their husband's wealth.

Bryn Terfel CBE was born in Pant Glas, North Wales, he took the first role of Falstaff at the Sydney Opera House.

This is No.5 of the Icons of Wales collection which was matured in bourbon casks.

Royal Welsh Whisky #6 (43%)

This release mimics the original Welsh Whisky Distillery Company. It was created in 1891 and in 1895 was even given a Royal Warrant by Queen Victoria. The distillery didn't last long however because it could keep up with its Scottish and Irish neighbors. The distillery closed in 1900.

This is No.6 of the Icons of Wales, a peated single malt matured in Portwood.

Rhiannon #7 (46%)

Written in the Welsh language in the 11th century, The Mabinogi are the earliest prose work in the history of Britain. These stories feature strong women characters, and none are stronger than Rhiannon - an enchantress and a horse goddess who could 'out-run any pursuer even whilst riding slowly'.

This whisky is part of the Icons of Wales collection, this is No.7 which was finished in a sherry wood grand cru cask.

Hiraeth #8 (46%)

Hiraeth is a Cymraeg (Welsh) word pronounced as Heer-eye-th meaning "A longing for your homeland, your heritage and your very being".

This is part of the Icons of Wales series, it is No.8 which was finished in an ex-bourbon cask before being bottled at a strength of 46% ABV.

The Headliner #9 (46%)

This release celebrates the Welsh Prime Minister David Lloyd George also known as 'The Headliner'. The social reformer also became a symbol of the national reawakening of Wales, a man who created more headlines than any other 20th century statesman.

This Icons of Wales No.9 was matured in Jamaican Rum & Ruby Port Casks.

Yma O Hyd #10 (43%)

This was released to celebrate the Welsh Football Association. Yma O Hyd is a song that was written in 1981 by a legendary folk singer Dafydd Iwan.

This is Icons of Wales No.10 which was matured in American rye casks.

Patagonia #11 (43%)

This celebrates the first group of Welsh emigrants who travelled from Liverpool to Patagonia in 1965 aboard the ship Mimosa.

This is Icons of Wales No.11, their first blended whisky in collaboration with La Alazana.
