Description

Julian "Pappy" Van Winkle was only 18 when he left Centre College to begin his career as a liquor salesman for W.L. Weller & Sons. Eventually, Julian became president of Stitzel and, in 1933, the Stitzel-Weller company was formed. Luckily, they already had some well-aged Bourbon stock, as Stitzel had been one of only six U.S. distilleries allowed to produce “medicinal” whiskey during Prohibition.

Van Winkle's first distillery opened on the day of the Kentucky Derby in 1935 and it only produced wheated bourbon. Thirty years later, Julian “Pappy” Van Winkle, sadly died in 1965. Seven years after the death of Pappy, Stitzel-Weller and its brands were sold off, this was during the "glut" era of bourbon, where distillers had more whiskey ageing than they knew what to do with.

During the sale of Stitzel-Weller, Pappy's son, Julian Van Winkle Jr., secured the right to purchase their barrels to bottle as his own product. In 1972, the Old Rip Van Winkle brand was born, with bottlings of seven and eight years old. After the death of Julian Van Winkle Jr., his son took over and began to increase the age and proof of Old Rip Van Winkle to 10 years and 107 proof.

In 1994, Julian Van Winkle III had his breakthrough, he released the world’s first 20-year-old Bourbon. With a photo of his grandfather on the front label, Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve 20-Year-Old was born. Today, this bourbon is now one of the most collectable and legendary produced.

This 20-year-old Pappy Van Winkle was distilled and bottled by the Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery in Frankfort. It is a limited edition Kentucky straight bourbon, bottled at 45.2%.
