Description

Situated on the Isle of Skye, Talisker Distillery was founded by brothers Hugh and Kenneth MacAskill who were Clearance landlords. The Distillery was opened in 1830 using the cleared population as its workforce. Unfortunately, their venture into whisky-making wasn’t a success, and by 1848, the bank was in control of the distillery. Talisker began to regain hope when Roderick Kemp and Alexander Allen bought the distillery in 1880. They expanded the site and built a distillery pier so that the casks no longer had to be floated out to ships. Sadly, the distillery burnt down in 1960 and didn’t resume production until two years later after being rebuilt. Almost a decade later, the maltings closed and Talisker started to acquire its materials from Glen Ord. Many bottlings were released from Talisker in the 21st century, an 18-year-old joined Talisker’s core range in 2004 which came just a year before the 175th Anniversary bottling was released. A non-age statement was then released in 2008, Talisker 57º North and Talisker Storm, Dark Storm and Port Rhuighe joined the range in 2013.

Time has mellowed but not tamed this powerful 18-year-old Talisker, made beside Loch Harport in the shadow of the Cuillin range. A rich, sweet nose introduces familiar, smoky maritime aromas. Full-bodied, this smooth malt opens sweetly, then becomes more assertive, with a whiff of smoke. It has an unmistakable, richly warming finish, more subtle here than in the 10-year-old.

This is the pre-2021 release as it states they are the only distillery on Skye which as we know is no longer correct.
